CHILD AND YOUTH CARE WORKERS CELEBRATED 

On 8 May 2024, the Professional Board for Child and Youth Care Work hosted a seminar on ‘‘Breaking new grounds in relational child and youth care work” to celebrate International Child and Youth Care Week’s 2024 theme of “Celebrating Relational Child and Youth Care Practice: Around the World” The seminar focused on the child and youth care work in different practice settings. 

In his welcoming message, the President of 5th Council, Prof Paul Mbedzi acknowledged the value of the work child and youth care workers bring to children and youth and also reminded the delegates on the motto of SACSSP NON-NOBIS (Not for ourselves) which describes the true meaning of commitment of every child and youth care worker. 

In outlining the purpose of the event, the Chairperson of the Professional Board for Child and Youth Care Work, Mr Donald Nghonyama emphasised the fact that despite the challenges faced by CYCWs, they continue to show resilience and this has to be celebrated. 

The event was graced by the presence of the Honourable Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu. The Minister appreciated the sterling work done by child and youth care workers and confirmed the important role these cadres play in the Department’s long-standing commitment of services to children and youth. 

Amongst the speakers, was one of the former beneficiaries of child and youth care work services who shared her experiences in terms of how child and youth care workers positively influenced her  life and was able to discover her leadership skills. She is currently a law student at the University of Limpopo. 

The event also presented an opportunity to appreciate the pioneers of child and youth care work profession and the academics including, Rev Barrie Lodge, Dr Merle Allsop, Dr Zeni Thumbadoo, Dr Lesiba Molepo, Dr Frida Randall and Ms Lesley Du Toit and many more unsung heros and heroins.
